BATAC CITY — Filipino Inventors Society Producers Cooperative (FISPC) national president Francisco “Popoy” Pagayon led Filipino inventors in celebrating the recently concluded 25th National Inventors Week.
In cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Technology Application Institute (TAPI), FISPC marked the 2018 NIW with its exhibit of Filipino inventions and related activities last November 20-23 at the Teatro Ilocandia in Batac City, Ilocos Sur.
The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte, the City of Batac and other institutional partners joined and supported the 4-day activities that included science and technology forums and entrepreneurship seminars, among others.
The Filipino Inventors Society (FIS) traces its beginnings in 1943, during the World War II years. Thus this year’s NIW observance coincided with the group’s 75th (Diamond) Anniversary.
Pagayon said FIS was born from the efforts of an intrepid triad composed of Teo Puruganan, Dalmacio Buenaventura and Pastor Reyes-Torres. From its humble roots, FIS has expanded its ranks and later organized the FISPC which is now headed by Popoy Pagayon as its national president.
FISPC now pushes its “InventrePinoy” program, an initiative to encourage Filipino inventors to develop their entrepreneurial skills and commercialize their inventions.
During the recent NIW event in Batac, MMSU president Dr. Shirley C. Agrupis said “investors struggle is real” and “the academe sector shares the same vision in transforming young people to be productive and proactive and to road track their capacity.”
DOST Sec. Fortunato T. de la Peña, for his part, said “encouraging collaboration of various sectors, to get them together to come up with new inventions” should be an aspiration. He also asserted how intellectual property protection can be of help, aided by media in “popularizing and commercializing inventions for their protection.”
Bannered by the theme ”InventrePinoy for sustainable growth and prosperity,” the celebration showcases “unique and marketable Filipino inventions that can be competitive even in the world area,” Pagayon said.
“InventrePinoy” was initiated by Popoy Pagayon to help bridge the gap between inventors and entrepreneur.
“Together with the help of the academe, public and private institutions, the media, the government, and the business sector, we can make ‘Inventrepinoy,’ a big success. Let us encourage and support entrepreneurs ” Pagayon said.
Pagayon has to his credit eight inventions, all backed with patents. His most successful invention is Probaton, a truncheon which is being used by policemen and village watchmen across the country now sport as a non-lethal arm equipment.
Be an “Inventrepinoy!”
FISPC national president Francisco “Popoy” Pagayon addresses guests and participants in the 2018 National Inventors Week in Batac City. “Tangkilikin ang imbensyong Pilipino; tangkilikin ang InventrePinoy,” goes his call.
