US Marine Lance Cpl. Joseph Scott Pemberton, is not yet off the hook even after President Duterte granted him absolute pardon Malacañang said US Marine soldier will still face court martial proceedings in the United States.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said US authorities have assured that Pemberton will face court martial upon his arrival in the US. “They promised that even if the Philippine process is now finished, Pemberton’s court martial proceeding s will continue once he goes back to the US.”
The court martial proceedings, Roque said, will also determine if there will be additional penalties to be imposed on Pemberton and if he is still qualified to remain in service. The US Marine soldier was deported Sunday and has been “perpetually” banned to reenter the Philippines.
Pemberton was convicted of homicide and sentenced to six to 10 years imprisonment by the Olongapo City court in December 2015 for the killing of Filipino transgender Jennifer Laude on October 11, 2014.
